Before we ask a farm for a single animal we read three years of production records, somatic cell history and genomic evaluations \u2014 and then we walk the pens ourselves.<\/p>\n<h3>What we look at first<\/h3>\n<p>Milk yield per lactation tells you very little on its own. We start with persistency, then somatic cell count distribution, then fertility intervals. A herd with a tight calving block and a low cell count is a herd whose management is under control, and management is what an imported animal takes with it.<\/p>\n<h3>Genomics as a filter, not a verdict<\/h3>\n<p>Genomic evaluations let us rule out animals that will never fit a buyer&#8217;s breeding objective.
